City Council Special Meeting – 3pm – Jul 9th, 2013
http://glendale.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=12&clip_id=4249

グレンデールの姉妹都市は韓国のGoseong(固城郡)、Gimpo(金浦)、そして日本の東大阪市です。

Glendale City Mayor Dave Weaver,

Councilwoman Laura Friedman,

Councilman Ara Najarian,

Councilman Zareh Sinanyan,

City Manager Scott Ochoa,

I hope this email finds you in excellent health.

I learned the news that former Mayor Frank Quintero of Glendale City visited Korea, and approved to erect a “comfort women” memorial in Glendale public property.

It is important to understand that “comfort women” in question means “prostitutes” for Japanese military people during World War II. The monuments built in Nassau County, New York, and in Bergen County, New Jersey say “more than 200,000 women and girls who were abducted for the use of sexual slavery by the armed forces of the government of Japan 1930’s – 1945 known as ‘Comfort Women’”. These words are not true. The researches made by the Japanese government and specialists have proved that those comfort women were not abducted by Japanese military people.

I know that human trafficking existed during the war time, and it was a social problem. Not only in Japan but also in places in Asia there were women who worked as comfort women for their family members owing to poverty. During the Korean War and the Vietnamese War, there were many such women.

Those comfort women memorials have targeted only the comfort women for the Japanese military people based on the fabricated stories, and are attempting to exhibit phony Korean propaganda I hope that Mayor Dave Weaver and the council members of Glendale check not only materials presented by Koreans but also many other materials as quoted below.

Glendale City Mayor Dave Weaver,

Former Mayor Frank Quintero,

Councilwoman Laura Friedman,

Councilman Ara Najarian,

Councilman Zareh Sinanyan,

City Manager Scott Ochoa,

I am writing this message of important subject as a one Japanese citizen.

I would like you to know the true story.

I learned the news that former Mayor Frank Quintero of Glendale City visited Korea, and approved to erect a “comfort women” memorial in Glendale public property. Recent few years, Korean American’s anti-Japanese propaganda and lobbying become extremely active. Korean’s allegation is during WWII the Imperial Armed Forces of Japan abducted approximately 200,000 young women and forced them into sexual slavery known as “comfort women”.

Korean American groups have already put up monuments of comfort women in the public properties in NJ and NY. Japanese are upset about this situation.

We do not try to rewrite the history. Also we are not revisionists or right wings. As the fabricated history is spreading, we cannot miss damaged our ancestors’ honor, and we want you to know the fact what the real history is.

Japanese government and South Korean government authorities jointly conducted a survey on comfort women issue in the 1990s. There was no evidence proving participation and forcing nature of the Japanese government and the Japanese military other than former comfort women’s testimony. “Approximately 200,000 young women were abducted and forced into sexual slavery” is not the fact. If you believe this number and abduction as the fact, please present reliable primary source which will fully convince we Japanese.

Friendly relationship among US, South Korea, and Japan is very important due to stabilization for Pacific Ocean Region. Because of this anti-Japan propaganda problem, public sentiment got worse among all three countries. Then those situations make happy military expansion countries and Communist terrorist counties, such as China and North Korea.

Comfort women issue is between Japan and Korea’s complicated problem. Therefore, I think that for the other countries like America it is difficult to understand. Attached are URLs which explain the fact. Please read and determine fair.

    Dear Ms. Christina Villacorte,

I write to answer the question you send to ‘Angelina’ from whom you received e-mail to oppose erecting statue of so called comfort women in Glendale California.
I am a Japanese male in fifties living in Tokyo and I happened to encounter the post by ‘Angelina’ asking somebody to answer your question in English in which language she said she is not fluent enough to answer.
She posted her message on July 5th and I noticed it on July 14th.
My opinion might differ from that of ‘Angelina’ but please see my answer below.
Should you have further question please do not hesitate to revert to me.

    Kind regards,

    XXXXX(本名)
    Tokyo, Japan

Thank you. I hope you can answer the questions below.
    1. Why do you oppose building a memorial to World War II-era comfort women?

Because it is not true history nor fair judgment to the past.
Abductions of Korean girls by Japanese Imperial Army is a fabrication invented by a female Japanese human rights lawyer, Mizuho Fukushima, and spread by Asahi Shinbun, leading liberal Japanese quality paper.
From 1980’s on, newly democratized South Korea’s presidents repeatedly take up the story together with other Japanese colonization issues once he came close to the end of his tenure and became lame duck to salvage his popularity.
I also understand historical unfavorable sentiments Koreans have towards Japanese and I think that is a driving force for some Koreans spreading the story to the world.
Sexual slavery story is a fabrication and not true history and totally politics.
And I can’t stand with seeing harmful lie spreading out to the world.

    2. You say that comfort women did not exist — how do you explain the historical data, and the fact that the Japanese government has apologized for it?

I think we should put this this way.
So called ‘Comfort Women’ did exist.
Some say that the word ‘Comfort Women’ was newly invented in 1980’s but I am not sure.
Regarding ‘Comfort Women’ or prostitutes accompanied to battlefield, around 60% were Japanese from Japanese archipelago, about 30% were Korean Japanese from Korean peninsula and 10% were Taiwanese Japanese.
Japanese and Koreans and Taiwanese were Japanese imperial subjects then.
Portion of comfort women roughly reflected the population of Japanese Empire’s ethnic group.
Intention of Japanese Imperial army to introduce and accompany prostitutes to battlefield was to prevent sexual crime by Japanese soldiers which surly had stirred up resentments towards occupying foreign force especially in China.
Small portion of comfort women came from local population like Chinese, Filipina, Indonesian, Burmese and Dutch from East Indian colonist families.
As you mentioned, from 80’s Japanese Government has apologized for the suffering caused and Japanese public raised compensation funds for the victims.
Consolatory payment is about 30,000USD per person and letter attached from Japanese Premier describes sincere apology.
As you might predict only one nation which rejected to accept the good faith from Japan was and still is South Korea.
South Korean activists said they can’t accept apology nor money unless Japanese Government admits Japanese Imperial Army directly kidnaped girls from peaceful Korean villages.
All of us know it is a fabrication and lie.
It’s pity to learn that indentured labor was illegal but did exist in Japan before WW2.
Many of Korean prostitute girls were sold by their parents.
Few might had been cheated by pimps.
I personally feel sorry for their sufferings but it is not correct to modify history in order to denounce neighboring country and harm mutual friendship in the future.

    3. Aside from advocacy, do you intend to make other efforts to block the proposed memorial from being built at Glendale Central Park?

    No.
I regard myself peaceful family man. I just can’t stop saying lie is lie.

    4. The private organization financing the proposed memorial in Glendale wants to try to build more of them, in other cities across the country. What do you think about that?

Shameful and pity. Resentment and ethnocentrism produce nothing for the future.
Even I was aware of Korean resentment towards Japan because of colonization in 20th century and invasions in 16th century and in 7th century I like Korean culture and cuisine and had some Korean friends.
I studied Korean history and when Korean economy took off towards industrialized country in late 80’s, I expected now new era had come for Koreans to forgive the past and two nations to understand equally.
But that was just a dream and I accuse Japanese left activists who try to gain fame and profit by fabricating story in 80’s and planting seed of current troubles and also short sighted Korean nationalists who are just the prisoners of hatreds.
I regard America as a nation which think much of pursuing truth and justice and hope you never give hand to cause and deepen hatred between neighboring two nations in the Pacific.

    5. Please you provide your name, city of residence, and a brief description of yourself.

    Please see above.
