昨年、慰安婦像が建ったジョージア州ブルックヘブン市のブラックバーン公園では3月24-25日に桜祭りが開催されます。この桜祭りを前に、歴史の真実を求める世界連合会 GAHT-USがブルックヘブン市宛てに公開書簡を出しました。最近撮影した現地の写真と合わせてご紹介します。

OPEN LETTER

March 2, 2018

Dear Mayor and City Council Members of the City of Brookhaven:

It has been eight months since your city had a controversial comfort women statue installed in your Blackburn Park. We regretted the installation and still are regretting it for very good reasons. Now the Cherry Blossom Festival is planned in this park later this month, and we would like to urge you to reconsider the decision you made last year.

The reasons why we consider your decision inappropriate are as follows:

1.  Historical records show that the inscriptions on your monuments are false. The comfort women were not coercively recruited, nor were they treated as slaves. The number of the comfort women was much, much less than hundreds of thousands.
2.  The Government of Japan should not be blamed for human rights violations because even the Interagency Working Group of the United States Government could not identify any in its report in 2007. ( https://www.archives.gov/files/iwg/reports/final-report-2007.pdf )
3.  The comfort women issue had been settled finally and irreversibly between the Governments of Japan and of the Republic of Korea in 2015.
4.  The monument accuses Japanese and Japanese-Americans without any good reason, and thus divides citizens into those accused versus those accusing.
5.  Cherry Blossoms are cherished by Japanese people dearly. Holding a Cherry Blossoms Festival in a park in which the comfort women monument is placed is a serious blasphemy. All Japanese would upset with this news.
6.  The monument is a high risk object in a public space. It might cause bodily injuries and bloody fights among opponents and defenders, if not mentioning costly lawsuits. Even the cost of maintenance and insurance protection would not be negligible.

Thus, we urge you to reconsider the decision and remove it from public spaces. We will be distributing this letter to all those concerned to refresh their understanding of the monument in your park.

ブルックヘブン市　市長、市議各位

論争となった慰安婦像が貴市ブラックバーン公園に設置されてから8か月が経ちました。私たちは像の設置を今も遺憾に思っています。それは、今月末に同公園で桜祭りが開催されるからです。私たちは、貴市の昨年の像設置の決定を早急に見直すことを求めます。

貴市の決定が不適切である理由は以下です。

1.  歴史的記録から、像の碑文の記述は誤りであることは明らかです。慰安婦は強制的に雇用されたのではなく、また奴隷のように扱われたのでもありません。慰安婦の数は数十万より遥かに少なかったのです。
2. 日本政府は人権侵害で責められるべきではありません。米国政府が2007年に発表したIWG報告でもそういった証拠は一切見つかりませんでした。（https://www.archives.gov/files/iwg/reports/final-report-2007.pdf)
3.  慰安婦問題は2015年に日本政府と韓国政府の間で最終的、不可逆的に解決しました。
4.  記念碑（像）は正当な理由もなく日本人と日系人を非難するもので、非難する側とされる側の市民を分断するものです。
5.  桜は日本人にとって特別に大切な存在です。慰安婦像が設置されている公園で桜祭りを開催することは、日本人に対する非常に冒涜的な行為です。全ての日本人がこれ知ったら怒るでしょう。
6.  記念碑（像）は公共の場において危険な障害物です。身体に怪我を及ぼす危険性があり、擁護者と反対者の争いとなることも考えられ、高額な訴訟となる可能性も十分にあります。管理維持費や保険保障の費用はかなりかかるでしょう。

従って、私たちは貴市に対して、早急に昨年の決定の見直しと像を公有地から撤去することを求めます。この書簡は、公園の記念碑（像）に対する新たな理解のために関係者に送ります。

＜3月4日撮影　桜祭りが開催されるブラックバーン公園＞
現地の方から撮影報告いただきました。

桜は直径8~9cmのが大きい方で、昨年秋に移動してから急いで新しく植えたと思われる細い苗木ばかりです。

ピンク色の花は桜ではありません。桃の花でしようか。ジヨ-ジアはピーチ州です。今は真っ白で匂いが臭い梨の花が満開です。寒が戻ってきたので暫く持つでしよう。桜は暖かい場所はパラっと咲いてましたが、まだ木が小さいのでどーでしようか。

この小さい桜は片手で掴める直径4cm位です。このパビリオンのある側は、たぶん桜祭りのメイン会場でしよう。像は、丘の向こう側で、あれを見ないで来て、帰る人たちがほとんどでしよう。

最大の桜並木４本！これが5、6年の直径8~9cmの桜。オリジナル桜でしよう。

桜も咲いていました。

２月、ブルックヘブン、ブラックバーン公園の慰安婦像。
現地の方から写真を送っていただきました。
今年（２０１８年）は３月２４日（土）～２５日（日）にここでブルックヘブン桜祭りBrookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival が開催されます。

像の近くには桜はありませんでしたが、新しい苗木が8~9本植えてあります。

誰が被せたのか帽子をかぶっています。近くには子供たちの遊ぶブランコ。

平和の少女像
これは1931年から45年に日本帝国陸軍に奴隷にされた、「慰安婦」と呼ばれる婦女子を称える記念碑です。
慰安婦は推定数十万人の２０世紀最大の人身売買の一つです。
この暗黒の歴史は１９９０年代に生存者が勇気をもって沈黙を破るまで数十年間隠されてきました。
慰安婦はアジア太平洋の少なくとも１３カ国の出身で、主に韓国です。殆どは第二次世界大戦中に殺されました。
この碑はこれらの婦女子の記憶に捧げ、世界に蔓延する性暴力と人身売買を撲滅するためのものです。
私たちは決して忘れません。

少女—拉致された平均１６歳の少女を表します
顔—抵抗と、恐れない決意を表現します
短く切った髪—家族から強制的に離された少女を象徴します
握りしめた拳—沈黙を破り、真実を伝える少女の決意を表します
裸足—家に帰って平和を見つけることが出来ない少女を表します
小鳥—平和と自由・解放の象徴。空に還った被害者と未だ地上に残された被害者を繋ぎます。
空の椅子—慰安婦の場所に座り、「もし私だったら、家族だったら、姉妹だったら？」と訪問者に考える機会を与えます。
影—年をとり、沈黙を続けた長い期間の苦しみを象徴します。
蝶—再び生まれ変わりたいという少女の願いを表します

Young Girl’s Statue for Peace

평화의소녀상

This memorial honors the girls and women,
euphemistically called “Comfort Women,”
who were enslaved by the Japanese Imperial
Armed Force from 1931 to 1945.
The Comfort Women constitute one of the largest
known cases of human trafficking in the 20th country
with estimates ranging up to the hundreds of thousands.
This dark history was hidden for decades until the 1990s
when the survivors courageously broke their silence

The Comfort Women are from at least thirteen
Asian-Pacific countries, principally from Korea.
Most died or were killed during World War II

This memorial is dedicated to the memory of these girls
and women and to the crusade to eradicate sexual violence
and sex trafficking throughout the world.

We will never forget. We will teach the truth.

Symbolism of the Memorial

GIRL- Represents the average of 16 when most girls were abducted
FACE – Express defiant, fearless resolve.
CROPPED HAIR- Symbolizes the girl being forcibly removed from her family.
CLENCHED FISTS- Represent the girl’s resolve to no longer be silent but to tell the truth.
BARE FEET- Represents the girl’s inability to return home and find peace.
BIRD- Is a symbol of peace, freedom and liberation. The bird connects those victims who returned to the sky and the ones who are still left on the ground.
EMPTY CHAIR- Gives visitors a chance to sit in the place of the comfort women and think “What if it was me? What if it was my family member, my sister?”
SHADOW- Is of an older woman, symbolizing the long period of hardship spent in silence.
BUTTERFLY- Represents the girl’s wish for rebirth.
